 "Struggled with fiberglass" 2010-04-12
By J. Fox
Purchased to make 2 holes for speaker install on boat. Material was 3/4" thick, fiberglass on top of marine grade plywood. It took 20 minutes to get a third of the way through using a 3/8" drill (couldn't apply much pressure). It made a nice groove in the fiberglass, ended up using a jig saw to cut through the rest of the way (repeated the process for the second speaker). My guess is that I would have had trouble with most hole saws, just be mindful if material your drilling through is dense (think about using a more powerful drill and upgraded hole saw).

"Ok for light use but expensive and limiting otherwise" 2010-04-01

Good hole saw for light use in a drill press if used with care. Hole saws that have a band with lots of little teeth have so much side wall area touching the wood while cutting that the friction burns the wood and takes a lot of the drill's available power and turns it into heat.

For a single 6" diameter hole the Eazypower hole saw is not a bad choice. But the Hole Pro HH-200 and HH-300 twin blade hole cutters for wood require about a forth as much drill power and cut faster than this Eazypower 6" hole saw. The Hole Pro H-200 (2" to 8" range) and HH-300 (2" to 12" model) twin blade hole cutters adjust so the hole can be any size from 2" up to 12" in diameter with one hole cutter taking the place of a dozen hole saws and making it possible to cut hole sizes that are not made in hole saws.

If you plan on cutting a lot of holes the Hole Pro HH-200 and HH-300 have replaceable blades at $11.95 a pair. I get over 100 holes in 3/4" birch plywood per set. They also make a clean edge cut in thick plaster and rubber and the tungsten carbide version (17.95) a pair are super for cutting MDF.

HOLE PRO BH-002: High Speed Steel (HSS) Blade Set

For truly heavy duty production situations the Hole Pro X models have a heavier bar and a different blade holder but use the same replaceable high speed steel and tungsten carbide blades. They have one model, the X-425 that cuts holes up to 17 inches in diameter and I have used it to make speaker enclosures for 14 and 15 inch diameter woofer speakers.

The X-230 production kit includes a clear shield that controls the dust though you can use the tool without it. I like the ball bearing mounted shield as it makes it easy to cut 4x8 sheets of wood without having to first cut it down into smaller pieces to place in the drill press. I get more holes per sheet of material this way and save about 40% on material costs.

With the shield the radius is 7" but that amount of swing is common with most drill presses.

Hole Pro X-230 Kit: 1-7/8" to 9" Infinitely Adjustable Twin Blade Hole Saw Cutter 3" 4" 5" 6" 7" 8" 9" Hole Wood Sheetrock Plaster Fiberglass Plastic MDF Cement Board. Use ¼ Torque of Hole Saw to Cut Twice As Fast

With the Hole Pro shield I can limit how deep the hole cutter cuts and for making holes in ceilings and not hitting a wire or bit of plumbing this provides peace of mind. The shield catches all the dust and cuttings so cleaning up is a breeze.
