This dvd is not totally useless. A novice like me can always learn, as I did, some new methods that will help me over time. I cannot afford the equipment shown in the video and neither can you if wood working is a hobby. No wonder the host measures once and then cuts. The camera work was terrible at key points in the DVD. But the host and the camera are always in sync for the infomercial parts. Keep your money until the DVD's match the quality of the Kreg Tools.

This video is a let down. Don't get me wrong, I love the Kreg Jig and using pocket hole joinery. I have built several bookcaes,and other cabinets with face frames, but never have I attemted to build cabinet doors. This video shows you how to build everything but what I consider the hardest part - THE CABINET DOOR! In the video he says "we build the door using pocket screws too" and that's all you get. Very disapointing.

My wife gave me this as a gift. She meant well, so I appreciate it.



But this DVD is worthless. Waste of money. Con job. I like Kreg tools, but they need to get out of the DVD business. I don't see why they want to screw over their customers like this. I feel like my wife just paid $10 for me to see some low budget infomerical. Wait a minute, the infomerical would actually have more information.



Even a total newbie would be better off getting his information elsewhere.



I agree with the other reviewer: SHAME ON YOU KREG. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME. You saw the chance to make a quick buck and didn't care if you screwed us over. If I ever meet the CEO of Kreg, this DVD is going to be shoved up a very dark place on his person.

The DVD is short and it doesn't focus specifically on the tool. Having said that, it's a good learning tool for those that prefer to learn visually, instead of reading through the manual. It would have been better if they had covered their frequently asked questions (FAQ's) from their website. It's OK for the price, but something like this should have been provided for free on their website.

 "Love the jig, not sure about the blue screws?" 2010-01-17

I just began building the Kreg workbench. I figured I'd start with a basic project like this to familiarize myself with the Kreg jig and how it operates. If I make a mistake on this, the wood is just inexpensive 2x4s that I can easily replace.



I really like the fact that it comes with the DVD, which gives all the basic details and is broken down into sections so you can easily go and just rewatch one section again.



One bit of advice I'd give from what I've experienced with the jig so far is that instead of drilling the pocket hole in one motion, I found it works better to drill down maybe a 1/4 to 1/3 of the way, then back the drill bit out to clean out the hole, then continue on in this fashion until you reach the drill stop. The holes are cleaner-cut this way and it's easier on your tools. This technique has worked well for deep holes for the 2x material. I also had one piece of wood that I neglected to sort out when I selected my wood that was heavier than all the others, so it's wetter than the others. I did have to make sure and clean the holes in the jig out after this, as they did gum up a bit from the moist sawdust produced from this one piece of wood.



I do wish the jig came with a few more screws right out of the box. You get an assortment of different sizes, but only 10 or so of each. This allowed me to basically get one little section of the workbench put together. I then had to go searching for screws. The problem was, neither Home Depot, nor Lowes carries the 2.5-inch screws. Luckily, there is a Rockler store in Denver. But when I got there, they only had one box of the 2.5-inch screws in a 50-pack, and they were the blue "weather resistant" ones. I didn't care because the screws are all hidden. I think the box was $1 more than the normal screws would've been.



Now this jig and these screws are all brand new to me. But, at this point, I did have a problem yesterday when using the blue screws. I don't know if it's the coating on them or what, but they drove down into the hole and then proceeded to strip out the threads they'd just drilled! I hadn't changed the torque setting on my drill at all from using it the day before with the regular Kreg pocket hole screws that came with the jig. So, I backed off the torque a bit and tried another screw in another hole. Same thing! I then turned the torque almost all the way down on the drill. That worked. Then I tightened that one by hand. After that, I tried driving another one by hand. I can certainly work around this, but I'm definitely apprehensive about using the blue screws again on anything else that might call for them, such as a potting bench, or outdoor chairs, etc. Kreg does make stainless steel pocket hole screws, but a box of 50 was about $25, compared to $6 for the blue screws. They do package larger quantities together as well. There was a box of 250 of the regular 2.5-inch screws that I needed, but I don't need anywhere near that many of that size screw at this point in time. However, if you were going to make, say several outdoor chairs, or multiples of anything for that matter, it is more cost effective to buy the larger boxes of screws.



I know this is supposed to be a review just for the jig, but these items all go together, so I figured I'd mention my issue with the blue screws. Before that, I did not have one problem with the regular screws. They worked flawlessly.



I am definitely looking forward to many more projects using the Kreg jig system. I don't have a lot of shop tools and no woodworking tools, other than a few basic chisels, etc. So, this gives me the opportunity to try my hand at woodworking a bit before investing a lot of money and space for things like a nice table saw, drill press, planer/jointer, tons of clamps, etc.



Is a matter of fact, I actually bought this jig to build two built-in bookcases and an adjoining mantel. I will be using the Kreg jig to build the boxes for the bookcases, as well as the faceframe and doors. No need to worry about mortise and tenons for the doors, or gluing and clamping biscuits into place and then waiting for the glue to dry. Once I get the workbench done, I'll then have a nice work surface to begin the bookcases on. If I get a chance, I'll come back and add more info once I've used the jig a bit more on plywood and hardwood for the bookcases.



So far, I'm quite impressed with the Kreg jig (other than the above-mentioned blue screws). I'm sure I'll find a ton of uses for it in the future. I've already started thinking about building a couple of nightstands and a blanket chest, something I probably wouldn't have thought of doing before buying this jig.

As a newcomer to home improvement and woodworking this is my standard method of building things. As a complete (and impatient) novice I watched the video (pocket hole solutions to trim carpentry) about 20 times and then went to work. I've built shelves and tool stands, and repaired my roof. I love this whole system--I can build most anything quickly. It is strong, and, unlike any other system, can be disassembled (even the screws can be re-used!), which is important---as a newbie I make mistakes! NO problem-- just unscrew, correct, and re-assemble. No waiting for glue to dry either. Kit is well-built in the USA. I recommend getting the vacuum attachment and a few of the clamps to start. You do have make sure the wood is cut perfectly square. The only thing I would correct would be to add a little hole to store the allen wrench and use some white paint to highlight the numbers on the jig. My carpenter friend now is bugging me to borrow it to build cabinets with on his next job. Better than lego or tinker toys :-)

I love this tool it is my favorite non electric tool I own. I too wish I bought it sooner there were so many things that did not come out the way I liked because I didn't have the jig. Seriously I am a retired grandma and if I can use it really anyone can I made many wonderful things including a large chicken coop for my girls with gates. You can't go wrong with this tool. You don't have to get the best one just get ONE.

As others have noted, this is an excellent product for some fast, effective joinery. Well designed and easy to learn. It will not work for all your joinery needs, but it will make lots of projects easy. Only drawbacks I found are 1. Joints aren't as strong as biscuit joints. 2. Even though they make hole plugs, I wouldn't want to use it where the pocket holes are showing. Besides that, it's a great product.

So many others have commented on this...I'm gonna contrast this $40 version against the $20 unit (which was my decision point).



I'm contrasting this against the "Kreg MKJKIT Mini Kreg Jig Kit" (aka, the $20 unit. )



I would definitely advise paying the $40 for this version of the tool.



#1. This one has the "depth slides" on the side of the blue box. It allows you to set the proper distance (based on the thickness of the stock).

Aka, if I'm putting pocket holes into 1" thick wood, the "slide adjustments" on the side of this unit allow that to be set in seconds. Then you clamp, and you're drilling in no time. I did not see these on the $20 version.



This has a "clamp holder" piece. Basically, if you get any "official" kreg clamps with a round quarter sized end, you can slide the clamp into this accessory piece ...and do your clamping a little faster. I am using non-kreg C clamps for myself, so this is optional, but a nice little feature.



This unit has 2 side by side drill holes. I like this because I can get a little more strength in my work piece and the 2 side by side screws look really sharp. Using the $20 unit and doing it manually by measuring would just take more time, and not be perfect each time. You of course don't have to put in 2 pocket holes (you can do just one)....but I find myself going ahead and putting the 2 holes at the same time, for a little more strength and not much more effort.



This version has the screw-driving-bit already in the kit. This is the bit that drives the special kreg screws. (Or it may just be a regular square bit..regardless, its in the kit)



This has a little pocket case that keeps everything nice and more importantly "together" so you don't lose any pieces. with my ability to lose tools, this may have been the extra $20 by itself. The pocket case allows you to "snap in" all of the hardware parts. Aka, its not just loose pieces in the case rattling around. Everything besides the screw-samples and plug-samples have their own snap-in-place in the case. Nice work kreg!



The kit comes with a few screws and plugs. That allows you to do some testing without buying a big lot of screws. Just a nice-i-ty I guess.

The $20 version is GREAT as well. But I do NOT regret paying the $40 for this version. The first time I made some pocket holes, and felt those screws bring everything nice and tight........I was like "This is AWESOME". It'll probably change the way I make little projects from now on.

You need to get (at least) one of the versions ($20 or $40 (or more of course)). But I highly recommend the $40 version.



Some hints:

Visit www.kregjig.com and look at the PDF user manuals. They have the screw size -to- wood thickness guides in them. Aka, if you have 3/4" thick wood pieces, it'll tell you what length screws to get, and whether you should get fine or course screws.

KREG has a great little business model with these and these things rock.



Note: amazon prices were similar to local retail stores for the unit themselves. The screws were actually cheaper locally.....just do some checking before you do the "amazon is cheaper" assumption. I love amazon!.....but I love supporting my local economy as well.

I have been using pocket hole screws for several years. The jig I have (not a Kreg) left a lot to be desired. You had to guess where to position the jig to get the screw in the middle of the board. This prompted me to make jigs for each thickness of wood used and worked well, but was cumbersome.



After seeing a video for the Kreg R3 Jr. I decided to try it. To my surprise it has worked better than anticipated. With the thickness guide on the jig and the drill depth gage on the case, there is no more guessing on the setup and no need for other jigs to make perfect pocket holes in a fraction of the time.

I have been using Kreg jigs for many years now, and have this item's predecessor. While I could not live without it, a few things always bugged me - and they all got fixed in this version. It was enough that purchasing it was a no-brainer.



The biggest improvement is the built-in offset lip with markings for all typical lumber sizes. In the old one I had to actually screw the lip that is used to align to the edge of the board on using two screws - and if I was using 2x material, add a spacer using different size screws - and if I was using anything else I had to measure and line it up manually. Good if I was doing a lot of boards, but a real pain for one or two and worse if I was switching back and forth! With this new model, just press in on the tab and slide the gray guide forward until it snaps into place at the mark for the size board I am using.



Second, with the lip in place, the Kreg clamp I was using was trapped in the jig and if I wanted to use it for something else, or just put it away, I had to unscrew the lip. Done away with in the new model, there is a spot sized for the clamp that is proud of the jig. Very easy.



Third, this comes in a nice little case that holds everything but the clamp. My other was part of a set of Kreg jigs so when I wanted to throw it into the toolbag to go to a work site, I had to put all the parts in, and some would eventually go missing. Now I can put the case into the toolbag, very handy.



Fourth, the jig from the old set that showed where to set the drill stop required me to lift the drill out of it in order to get the stop on, and of course it would sometimes slip when I tightened it so I have to recheck and sometimes adjust. Honestly it was such a pain that I got an extra bit and stop just so I could leave one set for 3/4" material and one for 2x material. In the new model the jig is part of the case AND holds the bit at each end, leaving space for the stop so I can tighten it without moving the bit.



Clearly Kreg is listening to their customers and making very handy and sensible improvements while maintaining their high quality. Like I said, buying this one even though the old one still works was a no-brainer. Now I'll just set up the old one for 2x material and leave it.
